Tie Down or Calf Roping, is a timed rodeo event featuring a calf and a mounted rider who throws a looped rope (not lasso, lariat, or riata...rope!) around the neck of a running calf, dismounts, and ties three of the calfâs legs together with a knot called a âHooeyâ in a smaller rope called a âPigginâ String.â Working cowboys developed the technique for more efficient branding and âdoctoringâ on the open plain.
